Another talent from famed “El Cajon Zone” of the San Diego region of California, Ricky Johnson’s rise to prominence was instrumental to the phenomenal growth of today’s sport of Supercross. His seven national titles and 61 all-time career wins was an AMA record until a young admirer, Jeremy McGrath took the sport to another level.

Ricky Johnson became known as “Bad Boy” by coincidence but his racing style and determination matched with his off-track outspokenness, lived up to the nickname as he became a fan favorite. As the youngest pro racer in history he was part of the factory Yamaha squad before landing with Team Honda in 1986 where he was virtually unstoppable.

“Ricky Johnson’s rise to prominence was instrumental to the phenomenal growth of today’s sport of Supercross.”

Milestones

In his career, Johnson won 61 AMA Nationals, seven of them AMA national championships. In 1987 he won his greatest race, the Super Bowl Motocross at the Los Angeles Coliseum. He also won the 1988 Supercross.

A serious right wrist injury in 1989 ended Johnson’s motocross career, but at 26 he simply crossed over into driving stock cars and then trucks. He was SCORE Rookie of the Year in 1993. He won the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 class divisions four times, twice on a motorcycle and twice in a vehicle. He said his greatest off-road achievement was winning all four short-course off-road championships – 1998 Pro 2, 2010 Pro 2, 2011 pro 4 and 2012 Pro 4.
